'Missing swimmer' arrested after psychiatric care

The Long Island man suspected of trying to fake his own death in a scheme to collect on a life insurance policy has surrendered to law enforcement authorities. ?

New York State Park Police Capt. Bruce Marx says Raymond Roth will be arraigned later Wednesday on charges of insurance fraud, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud and falsely reporting an incident. His attorney says he will plead not guilty. ?? ?

Roth was arrested after spending about 10 days in a hospital for psychiatric treatment upon returning to New York. Detective Thomas Duignan said Roth was calm and relaxed at the hospital and encountered no problems.

The 47-year-old was reported missing by his son on July 28 at Jones Beach. The reported disappearance sparked a massive taxpayer-funded search that cost tens of thousands of dollars and required extensive manpower.

Police say Roth was in Florida and South Carolina the entire time. The false disappearance came to light when he was pulled over in South Carolina for speeding and his name matched the name of a man reported missing in New York.

Roth's estranged wife claims he drained her bank account, increased his life insurance and altered his will before allegedly trying to fake his own death.

Roth's son was arrested and charged with conspiracy and insurance fraud in connection with the fake disappearance. He has since made bail.
