Black Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE with Jelly Bean hands-on

Android Central

What's this we have here? An international Samsung Galaxy S3 with 4G LTE support? In glossy black? With Android 4.1 Jelly Bean? We spotted this desirable device at the Vodafone Germany booth at IFA 2012 in Berlin today, and took it for a quick spin. It's a tad thicker than the standard international Galaxy S3, and a little heavier too. The glossy black chassis makes this S3 a bit less flashy than the other models, though if you prefer the original pebble white design, you'll be able to get the LTE S3 in that color too.

On the software side, it's running the latest version of Android, 4.1.1 Jelly Bean. Jelly Bean on the S3 works just like it does on the leaked builds we've seen for the 3G/HSPA model. You've got a redesigned notification bar, Google Now and other Jelly Bean features, along with new TouchWiz features like Dormant mode and Easy mode.

We've got more photos, and a full video walkthrough after the break.

No. 5 seed Tsonga upset in US Open 2nd round

NEW YORK (AP) ? This U.S. Open finally got its first shocker.

After three days of the top players not only winning but winning decisively, fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was upset by Martin Klizan of Slovakia in the second round. The 52nd-ranked Klizan won 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 on Thursday.

Before Tsonga's loss, top-five seeds on the men's and women's sides had played 14 matches ? and won all 14 in straight sets.

Tsonga was the runner-up at the 2008 Australian Open and a semifinalist at Wimbledon this year. He had reached at least the third round in 18 straight Grand Slam trips.

"Today I was not in a good shape," he said. "I didn't play good tennis. It seemed like I couldn't hit the ball enough hard to put my opponent out of position. I don't really know why it was like this today, but sometimes it's happen with me."

The 23-year-old Klizan, meanwhile, had failed to make it past the second round in three previous Grand Slam appearances. He had never defeated an opponent ranked better than No. 49.

"I had no pressure," Klizan said. "If I lose, then I lose. I lose with (a) good player. But I won and I'm very happy. It means for me more that I beat finally a guy from top 10."

This year's Open has generated plenty of drama in one area: comebacks from two sets down. American Mardy Fish rallied to beat Nikolay Davydenko 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-1, 6-2, the 10th time in this tournament a man has won after losing the first two sets ? already an Open record.

The 30-year-old Fish, seeded 23rd, missed two months this season because of an accelerated heartbeat but showed few signs of fatigue in playing nearly 3 1/2 hours.

And after Tsonga lost, another top-five seed was at least pushed beyond a straight-sets finish. Second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska was down a set and a break to 39th-ranked Carla Suarez Navarro. Then she won 11 straight games for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory.

Jack Sock also reached the third round at a major tournament for the first time. The 19-year-old from Nebraska beat Flavio Cipolla 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.

Sock, ranked 248th, got in with a wild card. He saved 12 of the 13 break points he faced, while converting all six he earned on the 88th-ranked Cipolla's serve.

Next up is a meeting with No. 11 Nicolas Almagro of Spain, a 6-3, 5-7, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 winner over Philipp Petzschner.

A week before the start of the Open, Ana Ivanovic couldn't walk without pain in her right foot.

"That's when I started to panic a little bit," she said.

Two matches into the tournament, the 2008 French Open champion is feeling healthy ? and relaxed. The 12th-seeded Ivanovic and another Serbian former top-ranked player, Jelena Jankovic, have quietly reached the third round at Flushing Meadows. Each has dropped just nine games through a pair straight-set wins.

Ivanovic beat 51st-ranked Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday. Jankovic, seeded 30th, defeated 115th-ranked Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino of Spain 6-4, 6-2.

Asked if the torn tendon is fully healed, Ivanovic laughed and said, "I still have a handful of pills every morning."

But the foot hasn't been hurting since the tournament started, and Ivanovic's draw is looking fairly painless with Caroline Wozniacki and Francesca Schiavone eliminated in her quarter.

Ivanovic has been trying to regain her health and her confidence for the last four years. She has yet to make it back to even a quarterfinal of a Grand Slam event.

"I'm really motivated. I want to get back to the top and back in contention to win Grand Slams again," Ivanovic said. "It's been a long process of getting my mind there and my body and game and everything together. Still, it's going to be a lot of hard work and long process, but I'm starting to enjoy it as well.

"I know if it doesn't happen this week, it's coming."

No. 1 Roger Federer opens the night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium against 83rd-ranked Bjorn Phau. Then sixth-seeded Angelique Kerber takes on seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams, the juicy second-round match made possible because the American is unseeded after missing time because of illness.

In other women's second-round action Thursday, 13th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova and No. 14 Maria Kirilenko advanced in straight sets.

Kei Nishikori, seeded 17th on the men's side, eliminated American Tim Smyczek.

Latvia believes US businessman's body found

RIGA, Latvia (AP) ? A body recently discovered in a forest is apparently that of a Russian-born U.S. businessman who disappeared in mysterious circumstances more than four years ago from his villa in a resort in Latvia, police said Wednesday.

The process of identification is still under way, but it could help police finally determine what happened to Leonid Rozhetskin, a millionaire who made his fortune in Moscow and spent much of his time in Los Angeles and London.

Police spokeswoman Sigita Pildava said DNA samples taken from a body found four weeks ago in a forest near the seaside town of Jurmala match those from Rozhetskin's nearby villa taken after his disappearance on March 16, 2008.

"The DNA from the body in the forest ... coincides with that from his house in Jurmala," she said. "But we cannot say yet that this means it is his body."

Police will now compare the DNA samples to those of his family members to confirm the identification, she said. Pildava declined to give further details and could not say when the results of a post-mortem would be available.

Rozhetskin's credit card was found on the corpse, police said.

Rozhetskin was seen leaving the villa with two unidentified men in the early hours of the morning, according to the Russian-language daily Telegraf. When investigators searched the house later in the week they found traces of blood on the floor, which they said matched the DNA of his personal items.

Born in Leningrad ? now St. Petersburg ? Rozhetskin moved to the United States in 1980. After receiving a degree from Harvard Law School, he moved back to Russia in 1992, where he made his fortune after the collapse of the Soviet Union. He eventually helped establish Renaissance Capital, a top investment bank and brokerage in Moscow that had been at the epicenter of Russia's turbulent financial sector in the 1990s.

In 2001, he became deputy chairman of Russia's Norilsk Nickel, the world's largest producer of nickel, a post he left in early 2005.

He spent much of his time at his homes in Los Angeles and London. In 2003, he bought the villa in the Baltic Sea resort, popular among wealthy Russian businessmen and situated about 15 kilometers (10 miles) west of the Latvian capital, Riga .

In recent years Rozhetskin devoted his efforts to media and film, creating a movie production company with Eric Eisner, the son of former Walt Disney Co. CEO Michael Eisner.

Vincent Gray weighs in on Washington Informer contract controversy

D.C.'s decision to publish this year's unclaimed property advertisement in a single media publication ? a move that has since spurred a contracting protest and charges of bias ? was "ill-informed," Mayor Vincent Gray wrote in a letter to Chief Financial Officer Natwar Gandhi.

Gray weighed in Tuesday on the contracting brouhaha between the Washington Informer, the Washington Times and the CFO's office of contracts. While Gray has no say in where the advertisement is run (the Office of the CFO is an independent agency), he questioned why it would run in only one paper, and no free papers, when the goal is to maximize the opportunity for all District residents, "regardless of income level or information consumption habits, to be aware of and review the list."

The contract award went to the Washington Times, which ran the advertisement over two consecutive weeks in August. The Informer, which had the lowest bid (when accounting for its LSDBE preference), protested after the CFO claimed it was not a newspaper of general circulation, because it writes primarily on black issues.

The Washington Informer's circulation is one-quarter that of the Times.

"Given the significance of the regular public of the unclaimed property list for all District residents, I am dumbfounded that a decision was made to limit publication this year to just one media outlet," Gray wrote.

The CFO has claimed it limited publication to a single newspaper to cut costs.

Gray offered a way out: Return to the days of yore, and publish in two.

"Had it been within my authority, I would have ensured that multiple media outlets would have been used as they were in past years," Gray wrote. "Since it is within your authority, I cannot urge you strongly enough to widen the scope of the audience reached by this information and immediately disseminate this information through additional publications including at least one free publication."

*cough* The Informer *cough*

Australian military suffers worst day since Vietnam

Five Australian troops were killed in two separate incidents in Afghanistan in what Prime Minister Julia Gillard Thursday described as the nation's deadliest day in combat since the Vietnam War.

The deaths, which included three killings in an "insider attack" by an Afghan solider, brought to 38 the number of Australian lives lost in the conflict.

"This is a very big toll... this is our single worst day in Afghanistan," said Gillard, who cut short a trip to the Pacific Islands Forum to return home and deal with the fallout.

"Indeed this is the most lost in combat since the days of the Vietnam War."

Australia's acting defence chief Air Marshal Mark Binskin said the first incident occurred inside a patrol base near Tirin Kot in the restive southern Uruzgan province where about 1,500 Australian troops are deployed.

In the second, two Australian special forces soldiers were killed when their helicopter crashed in Helmand province.

"Three Australian soldiers from the 3RAR task group were shot and killed when an individual wearing an Afghan National Army uniform opened fire with an automatic weapon from close range," he told reporters.

The dead soldiers were aged 40, 23, and 21 and were relaxing at the end of the day when the Afghan opened fire, he added.

General Abdul Hamid Hamid, an Afghan army commander in the south of the country, suggested it may have been a case of mistaken identity.

"Last night at around 10:30 pm an Australian forces patrol on foot wanted to enter an Afghan army camp in Chora district of Uruzgan province," Hamid told AFP in Afghanistan.

"An Afghan army soldier who was on duty at the gate of the camp thought they were enemy forces so he opened fire at them killing three Australian soldiers.

"He has probably mistakenly fired on foreign soldiers thinking they were militants," he added, saying the soldier, named Hekmat, had been serving in the army in Uruzgan for around five months. He fled after the shooting.

NATO has struggled to counter the so-called "green-on-blue" attacks in which uniformed Afghans turn their weapons against their international allies.

The assaults have spiked this year, with more than 30 attacks claiming the lives of 45 coalition troops, comprising about 14 percent of the overall death toll in the war for 2012, according to ISAF.

The latest deaths are the third "green-on-blue" incident involving Australian soldiers.

Gillard admitted the spate of "insider attacks" was making it difficult to build trust between Australians and the Afghans they are training.

"It is really difficult for our soldiers in the field," she said, but insisted she still had faith in the progress Australian troops were making in Afghanistan.

"Our strategy is well-defined, our strategy is constant, and we cannot allow even the most grievous of losses to change our strategy," she told reporters in the Cook Islands.

"We went there for a purpose and we will see that purpose through."

Australia is a close ally of the United States and its Afghan deployment began in 2001. Canberra later pulled out, only to redeploy in 2005.

Australia announced this year that it would begin withdrawing its forces in 2013, earlier than planned due to significant security gains and as Canberra has faced increased pressure over the long-running Afghan campaign.

Gymnast Sarah Finnegan Is US Olympic Alternate | 9th Arkansas

What started out as a recreational sports activity has turned into Olympic dreams for gymnast Sarah Finnegan.

The 15-year-old from Town and Country will be one of three alternates on the US Olympic womens gymnastics team at the upcoming London Games.

If any of the five gymnasts on the team gets hurt, then its possible Finnegan could move center stage. Shes currently training with the Olympic team in Houston, Texas, as if shell get the chance to compete. The team took off for London on July 19, and the opening ceremonies begin on July 27.

Finnegans story includes a six-year stint of training at the St. Louis Gymnastics Centre (SLGC) in Webster Groves, where her progression in the sport really began. She started participating in gymnastics at age three in Los Angeles, where she was born. A year later, her family moved to St. Louis. She spent a year at another gymnastics facility before her parents, Don and Linabelle Finnegan, moved Sarah and her three sisters to SLGC because it was closer to home.

In 2008, the Finnegan family realized Sarah had the talent and desire to compete at the highest level, but SLGC couldnt offer her the chance to become an Olympian. SLGCs goal is to produce college scholarships, not Olympic champions.

The Finnegans found an opportunity for Sarah to train for the Olympics at Great American Gymnastics Express in Blue Springs, Mo., which is known for producing Olympic competitors from coaches Al Fong and Armine Barutyan-Fong.

So, Sarah, her mother and three sisters, Hannah, 17, Jennah, 11, and Aleah, 9, also competitive gymnasts, moved across the state. Don, vice president of corporate operations for Enterprise Holdings, remained in St. Louis. He travels to Kansas City on the weekends and talks with his family on Apples Facetime. Don and the rest of the family will leave for London on July 26.

Don, a former All-American wrestler at Iowa State University in 1979 who was apart of the Cyclones 1977 NCAA champion squad, said his family is grateful for the SLGC coaches and opportunities his daughters had at the Webster Groves facility. Sarahs three sisters also competed and trained at the center.

The St. Louis Gymnastics Centre is a very good program, Don said. They provide a very competitive program. The coaches are very knowledgeable. Webster Groves is a great community. Sarah just had higher aspirations.

Interest in gymnastics has grown at the facility, said Amy King, Sarahs former coach at SLGC. Each class has a waiting list. King said SLGC trains more than 1,000 boys and girls, and shes currently training several girls who show signs of being able to compete at the highest level. King said Sarah had Olympic potential when she was her coach.

Im very excited for her, King said. Shes a soft-spoken, sweet girl. Shes very humble. Im very proud to have coached her. She always had natural ability. She just executed that ability. She just wanted more. Id love to say we taught her all that stuff. It turned out to be a very good move (to the Blue Springs center).

When Sarah moved on, she was competing at level eight. In 2010 and 2011, she competed in the junior division. By the start of 2012, Sarah was competing at the senior international level, which enabled her to compete for a spot on the Olympic team. She also was age-eligible for the Olympics by 50 days. In her senior international debut at the City of Jesolo Trophy in Jesolo, Italy, in March, she placed third overall. At the recent Olympic Trials in San Jose, Calif., she finished sixth overall. She also placed sixth at the Visa Championships in St. Louis in June.

Sarahs best events are on the balance beam and floor exercises. She doesnt let the huge crowds and noise distract her from performing ? just like her father when he competed at Iowa State. She shows the flexibility and agility ? just like her father did in wrestling.

She is very disciplined, very determined and very competitive, Don said. Shes so mentally tough. Shes just focused on what she has to do. Shes worked very hard for this. I just think she has God-given talent. Shes the youngest on the team and has the least amount of experience. Yet, she is still able to hang with the best.

King said she would like to see Sarah compete in London or maybe in the 2016 Games in Rio De Janeiro.

It brings chills and tears every time I watch her perform, she said. I look forward to seeing her the next four years.

Family of alleged shooter 'horrified'

PERRY HALL, Md. (AP) ? A 15-year-old student opened fire on the first day of classes at a Baltimore County high school Monday, getting off two shots and wounding a classmate before being rushed by teachers, authorities said.

The assailant was taken into custody after the shooting and was cooperating with investigators, police said. Baltimore County Police Chief James Johnson said police do not believe the shooter was targeting the victim, a 17-year-old male. Johnson did not identify the type of weapon the shooter used.

Jordan Coates, a 17-year-old student who was in the cafeteria at the time of the shooting, said the student used a shotgun.

The shooter walked into the cafeteria of the Perry Hall High School about 10:45 a.m., Johnson said. He fired one shot before being grabbed by teachers, and then another shot went off, the police chief said.

Johnson said the shooter acted alone. He did not answer questions about a possible motive.

Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger said it was too early to know what charges the shooter would face. Police said they would work with prosecutors to determine whether he would be charged as an adult.

The victim remained in critical condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center on Monday evening, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The suspect's father spoke to a reporter at his home Monday evening and said his son was the shooter. The Associated Press is not identifying the teen or his family because he is a juvenile and has not been charged. When asked about a motive for the shooting, the father indicated his son had been bullied. He gave no further details.

A woman who was also at the home and said she was related to the father, gave the following statement on the family's behalf: "We are horrified. We did not see this coming and our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and the victim's family."

No one answered the door Monday evening at the home of the alleged shooter's mother. A sign at the house said, "We don't call 911" and had a carved relief of a gun.

Coates said he watched teachers, including guidance counselor Jesse Wasmer, pin the student against a vending machine.

"My back was to the door. I heard a pop and thought it was a bag because people do that, but then I heard another one," Coates said. "And I turned around and a teacher had a kid pinned up against the vending machine, and I saw the barrel, and another shot goes off and people just start running."

Coates credited Wasmer with helping to stop the shooting, and numerous students went on Twitter to thank him.

"He grabbed the gun from the kid and got him" until other teachers came over, Coates said.

"We have some heroic and brave faculty members," Schools Superintendent Dallas Dance said. "They responded very quickly to minimize damage."

Kelsey Long, a junior at Perry Hall who was in the cafeteria, said she also thought the first gunshot was someone popping a bag.

"But then we heard it again and again and everyone started screaming and ran out to the front of the school," Long told the AP in a Twitter message.

Detectives were interviewing the suspect Monday afternoon, Baltimore County police spokeswoman Elise Armacost said. Officers spent several hours searching the school and found no other weapons or suspicious materials, she said.

Although no one other than the 17-year-old was shot, several people suffered cuts and bruises in the ensuing chaos, Armacost said.

The school was evacuated, and students were escorted to a nearby shopping center and middle school.

Perry Hall is a middle-class community along the Interstate 95 corridor, northeast of Baltimore city. The school is the largest in the county, with 2,200 students.

County Councilman David Marks, who lives next door to the school, said he had received dozens of phone calls and text messages from worried parents and residents.

"This is a very comfortable, very safe community, and it's an excellent high school," said Marks, who graduated from Perry Hall. "I think this is an aberration, but clearly one that is horrifying, particularly on the first day of school."

Police planned to provide additional security when the school reopens on Tuesday, and stress counselors were called in to work with students, faculty and staff.

Television coverage showed scores of police cars surrounding the school and parked on neighborhood streets. A group of officers with weapons drawn staked out a corner of the building, one of them lying prone on the ground and appearing to cover a particular area of the campus. Hundreds of students streamed away from the school.

Cathy Le, 15, said students were panicking as they tried to find out what was happening. They texted and called each other frantically as they were locked in their classrooms for more than an hour, she said.

At the scene, buses, emergency vehicles and parents in cars filled the roadway between a nearby middle school where parents were told to meet their children and the shopping center. There were obvious signs of relief displayed as parents found their children.

Kristin Kraus, whose son James attends the school, described hearing about the shooting as "absolute terror." However, Kraus said, "within a couple of minutes he texted my husband that he was OK."

pH-sensitive liposomal cisplatin improves peritoneal carcinomatosis treatment without side-effects

pH-sensitive liposomal cisplatin improves peritoneal carcinomatosis treatment without side-effects [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 27-Aug-2012

Scientists at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation and Federal University of Minas Gerais, led by Dr. Andra Teixeira-Carvalho and Dr. Mnica Cristina de Oliveira, have developed and characterized a circulating and pH-sensitive liposome containing cisplatin (SpHL-CDDP) aiming to promote the release of cisplatin near the tumor as well as decreasing toxicity. The development of analog drugs and new formulations are current strategies for increasing the effectiveness and safety of cisplatin as an anti-peritoneal carcinomatosis drug. The results, which appear in the August 2012 issue of Experimental Biology and Medicine demonstrate that the treatment of initial or disseminated Ehrlich ascitic tumor-bearing Swiss mice with SpHL-CDDP improved the antitumor efficacy and decreased renal and bone marrow toxicity of cisplatin-based therapy.

"Peritoneal carcinomatosis is a serious concern in the treatment of abdominal tumors such as hepatic, gastric and gynecological tumors", says Dr. Oliveira. "The strategy of local chemotherapy is interesting due to the possibility to increase the therapeutic efficacy while minimizing systemic side-effects. SpHL-CDDP treatment was able to reduce cancer cell proliferation and increase survival, in the animal model, with no known toxicity clinical signs found in the free CDDP treatment." says Dr. Maroni.

These results open the possibility of future use of SpHL-CDDP in chemotherapy of peritoneal carcinomatosis. "New studies are underway in our research group to investigate the signaling pathways of cell death as well as use of high doses of SpHL-CDDP for the treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis", says Dr. Teixeira-Carvalho.

Dr. Steven R. Goodman, Editor-in-Chief of Experimental Biology and Medicine, said " This very interesting study has utilized a new pH-sensitive circulating liposome containing cisplatin formulation which decreased cancer proliferation and drug toxicity in a mouse model. This provides the basis for further translational testing of this formulation leading to clinical trials aimed at more effective treatment of abdominal tumors".

Computer Deal of The Week - PC Hardware and Reviews - About.com

Computers from just a few years ago are more than capable of running today's software with little problem. The average user can hold onto a PC for over four years now. There are still some aspects of computers that can be very frustrating including boot times, especially on older computers. One great way to speed up an older system is to install a solid state drive as your OS and program drive. Prices have come down significantly such that they are much more affordable upgrades. Take for instance the Kingston SSDNow V200 256GB solid state drive from NewEgg for just $160. This is extremely affordable considering that this price just a year ago would get a drive of roughly one quarter of the storage. It uses a standard 2.5-inch frame but uses an older JMicron controller. This means that it is more useful for older PC that don't have a SATA III interface to take advantage of the faster SSD drives.

Life Expressions: Be Positive with Mesothelioma is Important

What is Mesothelioma? Mesothelioma is a disease affects the the lungs which connected to breathing. It also affects the abdomen, stomach and bowels of a victim which can be found and affects the heart eventually. This disease was commonly diagnosed more frequently and often resulting from exposure to asbestos. Unfortunately, a lot of people, especially men are the victim of mesothelioma due to the fact that a few years ago, there has been obviously less physical protection in terms of protective clothing and masks and fewer health and safety regulations to conform to. Consequently, the workers were continually exposed to the asbestos fibres and dust which caused the cells of the mesothelium to become abnormal.

When it became abnormal, then mesothelioma cancer is determined. Although there are treatments for mesothelioma, they do not have a high success rate particularly on patients in whom the cancer is in its later stages. The faster the mesothelioma is diagnosed and treated, the more chance of success and that?s what happened to Paul Kraus, a person who had been struggling to survive with Mesothelioma Cancer. He eventually endures the diagnosis of 1 year. Therefore, he wanted to share his story to those victims of mesothelioma. Surviving Mesothelioma book is a good way for those mesothelioma patients to be able to cope up with the prognosis of having a mesothelioma cancer and help them to have a positive outlook of facing the symptoms and even the outcome of the treatments.

?We all know it is not easy to get along with cancer and even the current treatments for Mesothelioma include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy which sometimes take like to be a challenge to face at. So, keep in mind a positive outlook, a healthy diet and of course the free book written by Paul Kraus.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Floridians, tourists and thousands of visitors for the Republican National Convention were warned Saturday to prepare for Tropical Storm Isaac, which is expected to strengthen to a hurricane by the time it reaches the Florida Keys.

While there were few signs of the approaching storm in Tampa, convention officials called off most events until after the storm passes. They planned to convene briefly as planned on Monday, then delay most of the schedule until Tuesday afternoon.

Streets were already shut down around the Tampa Bay Times Forum, where former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is expected to accept his party's presidential nomination Thursday night. Law enforcement milled about downtown, and some protests already were under way. One group protesting homelessness and the housing crisis "took over" a foreclosed home by cleaning the yard and planned to help a homeless couple move in.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott, a Republican, declared a state of emergency and canceled his plans to attend convention events on Sunday and Monday.

A hurricane warning had been issued for the Florida Keys, and officials warned tourists to leave. Forecast models show Isaac likely won't hit Tampa head-on, but it could lash the city with rain and strong winds just as the convention ramps up.

"I told some of my Democratic friends, 'We are the storm, baby, we are the thunder,'" said Steve Linder, whose business is planning all events for the Michigan delegation. Linder added, smiling, "and it ain't gonna stop until November."

Dianne Joachim of New Richmond, Wis., was in town for her first convention and vowed not to let Isaac ruin it.

"I just figure God's got this," she said as she arrived at her downtown hotel.

Scott said during a media briefing that delegates were being told how to stay safe during a storm, and officials were ready for storm surge, bridge closures and other problems that could arise during the convention. He also said he was in close communication with local, state and federal agencies, as well as convention officials.

"We are a hospitality state. We know how to take care of people and we want to ensure their safety," the governor said.

Isaac was blamed for at least three deaths after dousing flood-prone Haiti and was expected to scrape eastern Cuba on Saturday. It was forecast to hit the Keys late Sunday or early Monday, and it then could bring stormy conditions to Florida's west coast before moving to the Panhandle.

Isaac was expected to pass over the Keys as a hurricane late Sunday or early Monday. A steady stream of cars moved north along the Overseas Highway on Saturday, but officials said there were no major problems as some evacuated. At spots of higher ground along the highway, the only road connecting the Keys, dozens of people parked their cars to escape flooding.

At The Turtle Hospital in Marathon, workers were moving recovering turtles from outdoor tanks inside, and hospital founder Richie Moretti said warnings were being taken seriously. He noted Hurricane Wilma in 2005 was initially expected to hit as a Category 1 storm, too.

"It took out the motel, the hospital, the docks, and all the boats. So, I don't take anything for granted. If there's a storm coming, I don't care what number they give it. We're going to batten down and be ready," he said.

Volunteers carried in supplies at shelters throughout the Keys. On Duval Street, the famed tourist strip in Key West, many shops were boarded up. Bands of light rain moved through and passersby crowded under umbrellas and wore ponchos and slickers.

"The weather sucks, but on Tuesday it'll be nice," said an optimistic Kelly Calhoun, a 30-year-old speech therapist at the start of a weeklong vacation to Key West with family. "We got all the essentials: booze and food."

Yet the storm was days away from the Florida Panhandle. It was sunny and breezy on the beach Saturday in Pensacola, with people out strolling and playing in the sand. Condo associations told people to move furniture inside, but full-scale preparations hadn't yet begun. Waves weren't yet big enough for surfers.

When the storm hits, strong winds will be "enough to knock you over" and produce severe thunderstorms, National Hurricane Center spokesman Dennis Feltgen said.

Storm surge and tornadoes also are possible when Isaac hits, and winds could topple power lines and lead to lengthy power outages, Feltgen said. The Panhandle already has had a wet summer, so potential flooding was especially possible there.___

Associated Press Writers Suzette Laboy in Miami, Tony Winton in Marathon, Matt Sedensky in Key West and Gary Fineout in Tallahassee contributed to this report.
