iCloud.com slip-up shows Notes and Reminders, iOS 6 references

Image

Looks like Apple's going to add more than just banner notifications to iCloud.com in the near future: a randomly available beta.icloud.com page has shown Notes and Reminders alongside familiar iCloud fixtures like email and Find My iPhone. If that wasn't enough, some skulking about in the HTML code of the beta page showed for a time that access to the new features requires signing in to the "iOS 6 beta," a fairly strong indicator that a web refresh will go hand-in-hand with a new mobile platform at this year's WWDC. What else is in store will likely have to wait until the developer event next month, but we at least know now that our iPhone's grocery lists will survive on the web.

[Thanks, Tommy]

Engadget Giveaway: win a Sony 40-inch 1080p HDTV, courtesy of NBC Universal!

It's movie time, folks. The bad news is that you have to bring your own popcorn. The good news, on the other hand, is that the feature film and the TV are on us! Thanks to the folks at Universal Studios Home Entertainment, there's a 40-inch 1080p HDTV up for grabs. The occasion is the studio's release of The Grey, starring Liam Neeson, on Blu-ray this coming Tuesday May 15th. If you're the lucky winner, however, you won't even have to venture out to stores to pick up a copy of your own -- one will come included with the TV! Unfortunately, there's one additional restriction this time around: only US residents are able to enter. But if you qualify, head below and leave a comment, and good luck!

Huh? Reese Witherspoon's Mom Sues Her Dad for Bigamy

Reese Witherspoon is on maternity leave from making movies, but she's got plenty of drama going on at home. In a very strange legal battle, Reese's mother, Betty Witherspoon, 60, has sued Reese's father, John Witherspoon, 70, for bigamy, USA Today reports. It seems that Reese's dad recently married another woman... while neglecting the fact that he's still married to Betty!

Meg Whitman: HP's engineering is very much still alive, aims to be cloud computing leader

Image

HP sure knows how to wrap up a party -- by letting its CEO make a surprise appearance right at the end of the show. Joining Todd Bradley on the stage, Meg Whitman reassured the audience with her company's "commitment to fantastic products," and that "engineering is very much still alive from HP." In regards to the recent merger of HP's Imaging and Printing Group with Personal Systems Group (which changed this week's show entirely), Meg -- who's a big believer in focusing tasks -- is confident that Todd's new team will deliver a united brand and a unified design language, thus making the PC business stronger with the best customer experience and customer support.

Additionally, Meg seems to be getting along just fine with the board, saying that they are deeply engaged to plot a brighter future for HP. Under Meg's supervision, HP is doubling down on R&D and incubation, as well as aiming to be a leader in cloud computing (she claims that HP is already the largest provider of private cloud services) and security by bringing a full host of benefits that the competitors lack. When asked about HP's mobile and tablet strategy, Todd skirted around by emphasizing the happy partnership between HP and Microsoft on tablets, but he also said that markets evolve and change all the time, and that his company's well aware of the differences between the needs of enterprises or small businesses and the needs of consumers. So in other words, stay tuned.

FTC seeking $52.6M for alleged bogus phone charges

(AP) ? Federal regulators are seeking $52.6 million from a billing company that they accuse of adding unauthorized charges to consumers' phone bills.

The Federal Trade Commission announced Tuesday it has asked a federal court to issue a civil contempt ruling against Billing Services Group and order repayment.

The agency says Billing Services added charges for unauthorized services such as voicemail and streaming video to bills for about 1.2 million phone lines, a practice known as "cramming." It says the company acted on behalf of an individual it describes as a "serial phone crammer."

The FTC says the cramming occurred from 2006 through 2010 and added about $70 million in bogus charges to phone bills. It says San Antonio-based Billing Services violated a 1999 settlement with the agency that prohibited unauthorized billing.

Billing Services disputed the FTC's allegations. It said the agency's request to the court "represents an incomplete and inaccurate representation of the facts and leaps to false conclusions."

"The bottom line is that the FTC is trying to blame (Billing Services) for the acts of another party," the company said in a statement.

Billing Services is the biggest third-party billing company in the U.S. Billing companies act as middlemen between phone companies and third-party vendors selling services. They collect charges for the vendors' services for the phone companies.

The agency asked a federal court in San Antonio to order Billing Services to pay $52.6 million, which it said is the amount that the company billed consumers and failed to refund.

In a court filing, the agency said the company worked with a "crammer" named Cindy Landeen and her associates to bill consumers for the unauthorized services, which included three voicemail services, one streaming video service, two identify-theft protection services, two directory assistance services and one job skills training service.

The company "made it possible for con artists to steal people's hard-earned money by placing charges on phone bills for services they never ordered or used," David Vladeck, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, said in a statement.

Billing Services said it was being unfairly blamed for the actions of Landeen's company, which was one of its clients

Landeen couldn't be reached for comment. A phone number listed in her name was disconnected.
