Kim Kardashian and Lindsay Lohan to Dine at the White House... Together

Fox News is determined to prove the Mayans right.

For reasons that defy comprehension - even more than how Gretchen Carlson still has a job - the network has invited two guests along with it for Saturday night's White House Correspondents' Dinner: Kim Kardashian and Lindsay Lohan. Moreover, they will be seated at the same table.

Yes, readers. Prepare for the Apocalypse.

Kim Kardashian at Restaurant OpeningLindsay Lohan on a Red Carpet

Sources tell TMZ that Kim and Lindsay actually get along well, so don't expect any fireworks at the event.

But will Kardashian and Lohan actually meet President Obama?!? Will their photo op equate to this amazing one of a bar patron and Obama?

"No way. The President almost never mingles with the guests," an insider says.

Other stars, with actual talent, expected to attend on Saturday include: George Clooney, Reese Witherspoon, Viola Davis, Charlize Theron, Eva Longoria and Daniel Day-Lewis.

Unfortunatly the time has come for this scraper to come down (seemingly it may come as a shock to some that this is not provided by the BBC). I wrote this back in 2005 and have modified it a couple of times since mainly so that I could more easily consume RSS on the move. In short, I no longer use it, I find consuming live news is not actually something an RSS reader does very well and I face a constant battle against sites trying to use these feeds to monetize BBC content and failing to pay any attention to etag or last modified headers (hello palin-pedia.com et al). Please update your RSS subscription as the last remenants of this will be removed soon , the official BBC RSS feed you are looking for is: http://newsrss.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsonline_uk_edition/world/rss.xml

Intel Core i7-2700K

When Intel released its line of second-generation Core processors a year ago (under the ?Sandy Bridge? code name), it offered consumers new opportunities in various areas of CPU performance, regardless of how much you wanted to spend. The top chip at launch was the Core i7-2600K (4 stars), a four-core, eight-thread, 3.4GHz powerhouse that clearly defined the high end of the mainstream space. But as Sandy Bridge approached the end of its brief life span, a minor update was needed to help guide the family into a more Ivy Bridge??friendly world. That CPU, the Core i7-2700K ($332 list) was to serve as a bare replacement for the Core i7-2600K, without upsetting too many digital apple carts along the way. At that job, and any others required of it, it succeeds?if not dazzlingly.

The Core i7-2700K represents a mere 100MHz speed bump above its predecessor, to 3.5GHz. But all of its other characteristics are identical: 8MB of cache, four cores and eight threads (thanks to Intel?s Hyper-Threading technology), integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000, and the full line of shiny Sandy Bridge features, ranging from Turbo Boost 2.0 (which temporarily increases processing speed when the appropriate head room is available), Quick Sync Video (for faster rendering and conversion of video files), and so on. Of course, the Core i7-2700K also shares some of the same limitations of the Core i7-2600K, most notably in that graphics system. It supports only DirectX 10.1 (DX10.1), not DX11, and won?t provide more than adequate support for any builder who declines (for whatever reason) to use a discrete video card.

For those who don?t already own a Core i7-2600K, the evidence is clear: There?s no reason to upgrade. Testing both the older chip and the new one in the same desktop revealed that there?s practically little performance difference between the two. As you might expect, the faster chip inspired a few marginal improvements. We saw, for example, scores of 7.28 versus 7.26 in CineBench R11.5, 3,725 versus 3,679 in the Futuremark PCMark 7 full-system test, and the newer chip needed five fewer seconds to complete the POV-Ray 3.7 single-CPU rendering test (14 minutes 54 seconds versus 14:59). But in other tests we saw no substantial changes at all; both chips took 2 minutes 50 seconds to apply a dozen filters and effects in Adobe Photoshop CS5, both took 32 seconds to convert a video in Handbrake 0.9.6, and both achieved the same 206MBps rate in our TrueCrypt 7.1a cryptography trial. Even power usage was functionally identical between the chips, with the full systems for both idling at 71 watts and achieving about 167 watts under full load.

We ran as much of our suite of gaming tests on the Core i7-2700K as we could to measure its graphics prowess, but the lack of DX11 support limited what we could do. As it was, it proved inadequate for most basic 3D gaming at a fairly standard gamer?s resolution of 1,920 by 1,200; in Tom Clancy?s HAWX2, usually the benchmark at which lower-tier video hardware does best, the Core i7-2700K could eke out only 15fps with all the details maxed. If you?re willing to dial back on the eye candy and play at a lower resolution, you will be able to get playable frame rates using just the Core i7-2700K. But our recommendation about this likewise hasn?t changed much from the Core i7-2600K days: Buy a discrete video card, even an inexpensive one, so you can leave the CPU to what it does best. (For better integrated graphics at this point, AMD APUs are the preferred way to go?but you?ll sacrifice raw performance as a result.)

At this point, with Ivy Bridge just around the corner, the Core i7-2700K is an upgrade that will appeal primarily to enthusiasts looking for every last drop of speed they can squeeze from a CPU. Its unlocked multiplier means it?s every bit as overclockable as its forebear, and that extra 100MHz gives you a nice, if subdued, additional nudge out the starting gate. But if you already have a Core i7-2600K, there?s no reason to replace it now. If you want to stay within the Sandy Bridge family, our favorite remains the Editors? Choice Core i5-2500K (4.5 stars), which lags behind the Core i7-2600K by 100MHz, lacks a bit of cache, and doesn?t have Hyper-Threading, but delivers nearly equivalent performance in most areas and costs considerably less ($216 list). If, however, you?re seeking out the fastest second-generation Core chip you can find, and aren?t concerned about its relationship to the Core i7-2600K or its rapidly approaching obsolescence with Ivy Bridge, the Core i7-2700K is a potent choice for powering a high-end middle-of-the-road PC.

Online Video vs. Music ? Different Game, Same Rules

netflixNetflix ? the poster child for premium Internet video services ? was birthed by iTunes and other online music services before it. Yes, movies and music are fundamentally different forms of media. Apart from the obvious, in the online world, music tracks can be unbundled from albums (movies can?t), and the number of movies produced in any given year represents a small fraction of the total volume of recorded music (and these differences directly impact business models). Nevertheless, despite these differences, three ingredients that have proven to be essential for the success of any online music service apply equally to the premium online video world. This trilogy represents the ?Sacred Tenets of Online Media? that apply to any service provider. Apple was the first to get it right in the online music world with iTunes. Who will first get it right at massive scale for online video? Netflix may have the lead, but the game is still early. So, game on.

Mariah Carey?s Weight Loss Is

Mariah Carey?s weight loss is something that I am personally inspired by. Girlfriends got huge when she became pregnant with her twins, and I am not judging, she was knocked up with TWO beautiful babies. But I am so proud of my idol for getting her figure back within a year of having her babies! Mariah is on the cover of Shape where she flashes her tones tummy and legs in a white undies and a cropped sailor top. CUTE!!! While Mariah is known diva and doesn?t always come off as the most relatable to the average woman, her weight struggle is something she has really opened up about and has really kept it real. She talked candidly with Shape about her struggle: ?I put on 70 lbs but if you look at me in pictures you?d think it was more like 9,000 lbs. I have a lot of empathy with people who have to lose a lot of weight. I have been there and I know what they are going through. I remember thinking at the time: ?I?ll never look or feel the same again.? On having her twins, Monroe and Moroccan: ?Pregnancy was probably the best and the [...]

About those mobile graphics predictions - games like The Dark Meadow can't come soon enough

NVIDIA

Earlier, Phil talked a bit about the way mobile graphics are inching their way up towards full-blown console performance. NVIDIA, who is entrenched in gaming and graphic performance on all fronts, at their a little shin-dig in Seattle really wanted to wow us with numbers and slides and predictions. That's all well and good, but if you're like me, the talking only makes you want to see the product and evaluate it against all the hype.

I'll let others hash out the strengths and weaknesses of mobile gaming in relation to PC and console gaming. I'm that guy who bought Skyrim for the PC, but never had a chance to install it and play it yet. I also won't have time to fool with the Diablo III open beta this weekend. But I do have time to play games on my tablet, and I don't want to waste it playing crappy ones. Make it better, do it as fast as you can, and keep folks like me, who would rather play great games on a small screen while kicked back in a La-Z-Boy, all happy inside. That's why the thing I found most exciting about yesterday's little get together was the mention of two new Tegra Games -- Bounty Arms by Kerosene Games and The Dark Meadow from Phosphor studios. Seeing new titles optimized for the Tegra 3 gets me a little tingly, so I poked around the Internet a bit and found that Bounty Arms comes from the same developers who brought us BladeSlinger (which kicks a serious amount of ass), and a short preview of the THD optimized version of The Dark Meadow. These can't come soon enough. Hit the break to see the trailer and I think you'll agree.

Hacker attack underlines Web role in China scandal

BEIJING (AP) ? A massive hacker attack has crippled an overseas website that has reported extensively on China's biggest political turmoil in years, underscoring the pivotal role the Internet has played in the unfolding scandal.

North Carolina-based Boxun.com was forced to move to a new web hosting service Friday after its previous host said the attacks were threatening its entire business, website manager Watson Meng told The Associated Press. He believes the attacks were ordered by China's security services, but it isn't clear where they were launched from.

The assaults on Boxun's server followed days of reporting on Bo Xilai, formerly one of the country's most powerful politicians, who was fired as head of the mega-city of Chongqing and suspended from the Communist Party's powerful Politburo amid accusations of his wife's involvement in the murder of a British businessman.

The scandal has deeply embarrassed Communist Party leaders obsessed with controlling their image and imposing strict secrecy over their inner workings.

Six years ago, when Shanghai's powerful boss was toppled, Chinese social media was in its infancy and months went by with no word on the case against him.

Today, the dynamics have changed, and when the government fails to release information about a key political development, the online rumor mill goes into overdrive, with China's half-a-billion Internet users taking to blogs, foreign news sites, and ? most significantly ? Weibo, China's hugely popular version of Twitter.

"People on Weibo used to care mainly about lifestyle issues, but this time we're seeing it play an unprecedented role in spreading political information and opinion," said Zhan Jiang, a professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University's School of Mass Media.

The first whiff of the Bo scandal came when his former right-hand man, ex-Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun, breached protocol with a surprising Feb. 6 visit ? first reported in Weibo postings ? to a U.S. Consulate in a neighboring city. There were rumors of a spat with Bo, but neither Chinese nor U.S. revealed any details of the consulate visit.

At the time, Bo admitted to not properly managing his staff, but it appeared he would keep his job and remain a candidate for the party's all-powerful Politburo Standing Committee when a new generation of leaders is picked this fall.

But then the scandal caught fire with suggestions online that Wang was spreading the word about the alleged involvement of Bo's wife in the death of Briton Neil Heywood, a business consultant with close ties to Bo's family. Those suspicions first appeared in a brief posting in early March by a reporter from the Southern Weekend newspaper group, who said he'd received the information via a Feb. 15 text message from a telephone number used only by Wang.

That happened after Chinese authorities took Wang into custody on Feb. 7, so it wasn't known who sent the message. However, it was widely circulated online, and the foreign media flocked to Chongqing to investigate, making it impossible for the government to ignore the case without sparking an international incident.

A few weeks later, on March 15, Bo was sacked as Chongqing party chief, and on April 10 authorities announced he was under investigation and that his wife and a household aide were suspects in the Heywood murder.

Boxun, which has reported on the scandal since early February, was brought down for several hours Friday in a denial of service attack in which hackers deluge a website to paralyze it.

"We publish articles critical of the Chinese government so we're accused of having ulterior motives," Meng said in an online chat. "But in the West, most media is critical of its government, so why can't we be?" he said.

Foreign governments and corporations routinely complain of hacking attacks from China, although it is rarely provable where they originate or who is behind them. The Chinese government routinely denies using hackers to attack web sites or steal secrets online.

Meng set up Boxun in 2000 to spread word on the pro-democracy movement, human rights, and corruption, much of it submitted by readers in a form of citizen journalism. Its edgy nature has brought it under hacker attack before and forced it to go without advertising since 2005. Meng says Boxun is independently financed, although the U.S. government-funded National Endowment for Democracy has partly backed the China Free Press project managed by Meng and registered at the same address as Boxun.

Not all of Boxun's reports have held water and it has offered competing accounts of what drove the decision to cashier Bo. But many of its reports on allegations of Gu's involvement in the Heywood death and the Bo's falling-out with Wang have since been proven true or been corroborated by other sources.

Traffic to the site has grown 155 percent over the past three months, according to Internet monitoring firm Alexa, with the second largest chunk of visitors coming from China, despite government blocks.

China heavily censors the Internet and blocks Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and scores of other overseas sites. Government monitors swiftly remove sensitive postings and have tried to rein in Weibo by requiring proof of identification for new accounts and sometimes disabling sections where comments can be posted.

Still, the sites have a profound effect. Witness reports on a horrific train collision last year prompted disgust at officials' callousness and a sweeping safety review.

One reason why the government may not have cracked down harder on the Internet so far is because parties within the establishment also use it to attack their foes, spread disinformation or advance their own agendas, said Xiao Qiang, director of the China Internet Project at the University of California-Berkeley.

But they can't completely control the online discussions or filter out all unwanted revelations, Xiao said.

"Those facts and opinions generate pressure or create the conditions for the government to take actions such as firing Bo Xilai," he said.

PSA: I'm Watch smartwatch series ready to ship, as soon as it confirms the destination

I'm Watch series ready to ship

All things I'm Watch went a bit quiet following the unveiling of its latest series of smartwatches at CES 2012 several months ago. Now there's finally been an update -- we've heard from a kindly reader that the Italian manufacturer is now ready to deliver on its preorders, requesting a final confirmation of delivery details before they leave the warehouse. Those willing to stump up the substantial amount -- prices start from €340 ($445) -- for these sapphire glass-coated timepieces will get to dabble with a watch-friendly version of Android 1.6. While this means the device will only be able to access a fraction of Google's app catalogue, at least there's a whole gamut of colors and material finishes to choose from -- with the requisite price difference, of course.

[Thanks Owen]

Acer's A100 and A500 tablets getting Ice Cream Sandwich on April 27th

Acer's A100 and A500 tablets getting Ice Cream Sandwich on April 27th

With April nearly over, it's high time Acer came clean on when exactly its promised Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for the A100 and A500 would land. Today the company did just that, revealing that US owners of either tablet can opt-in for their frozen makeovers starting on the 27th. Bad news if you're rocking AT&T's variant of the latter though, as the listing on the company's support page for the A501 says "no update planned." Those not tied Ma Bell can expect Acer's skin -- including that ring launcher -- grafted onto Google's latest, much like the A200's ICS upgrade back in February. Already pumped? Go ahead and bookmark that source link. Do it, we won't judge.
